A few years ago, influencer marketing in India meant sending products to popular accounts and hoping for a post. Today creators are one of the most powerful sales channels in the country. They review products, teach people how to use them, run live shopping sessions and drive traffic to marketplaces and brand stores. For brands, the question is no longer whether to work with creators, but how to turn creator content into consistent, measurable commerce.
The scale of India’s creator economy
Boston Consulting Group’s report “From Content to Commerce: Mapping India’s Creator Economy”, launched at WAVES 2025, estimates that India has around 2 to 2.5 million monetised creators who influence roughly US$350-400 billion in annual consumer spending. BCG projects that figure could exceed US$1 trillion by 2030. Seventy percent of brands surveyed plan to increase creator budgets by 1.5 to 3 times over the next two to three years, and influencer marketing already accounts for 10-20% of their marketing budgets.
Global platforms see the same shift. Meta reported in early 2026 that its partnership ads, which let brands run ads through creators’ handles, had reached a US$10 billion annual revenue run-rate, more than doubling year on year.
Why many creator campaigns underdeliver
- Follower count over fit: big names with audiences that do not match the product.
- One-off posts: a single mention rarely changes behaviour; repetition and trust do.
- Over-scripted briefs: content that sounds like an ad loses the authenticity that makes creators effective.
- No path to purchase: great content with no link, code or shoppable route.
- Weak measurement: reporting likes and views instead of sales.
A framework for creator-led commerce
1. Choose creators for audience and credibility
Map creators by audience fit (age, city tier, language, interests), category credibility and content quality before reach. BCG’s research shows only a small share of creators, around 8-10%, monetise effectively. Many nano and micro creators have highly engaged niche audiences in regional languages, which is especially valuable as growth shifts beyond the metros.
2. Build long-term partnerships
Ambassador programmes over three to six months let creators use the product properly, tell more convincing stories and appear repeatedly in front of the same audience. They also reduce the cost of briefing and onboarding.
3. Brief for outcomes, not scripts
Give creators the key message, the must-have facts, the dos and don’ts, and the call to action, then let them create in their own voice. The best-performing creator content usually looks like the creator’s normal content, not like the brand’s TV ad.
4. Make every piece of content shoppable
Connect creator content to a purchase path: affiliate links, discount codes, product tags, marketplace storefronts, live shopping or WhatsApp ordering. Then amplify the best organic posts with paid partnership ads, which combine the creator’s credibility with precise targeting.
5. Stay compliant
Disclosure is not optional. ASCI’s guidelines require clear labelling of paid and gifted content, and its complaints report for 2023-24 found influencer-related violations made up 21% of processed cases. Health, finance and other regulated categories need additional care, and claims must be accurate and substantiated.
Formats that convert
Not all creator content sells equally. Formats that consistently move people from interest to purchase include honest reviews and comparisons, “get ready with me” and routine videos that show a product in daily use, unboxings that answer practical questions, tutorials and recipes, and live sessions where viewers can ask questions and buy in real time. For considered purchases such as electronics, finance or education, longer explainer videos on YouTube often do more work than short Reels, because viewers want detail before they decide. Regional-language creators are particularly effective for brands growing in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, where trust in a familiar voice can outweigh national celebrity.
Measuring creator commerce
- Sales and revenue by creator, using codes, links and post-purchase surveys
- Cost per acquisition compared with other paid channels
- Content performance when reused as ads (thumb-stop rate, CTR, ROAS)
- New customer share and repeat purchase from creator-driven buyers
- Sentiment in comments and brand search lift during campaigns
Bringing it together
The most effective brands run creators as an always-on channel: a roster of long-term partners, a monthly content calendar, a system to repurpose the best posts into paid ads and product pages, and clear sales reporting. Creator content also feeds other channels, from website testimonials to marketplace listings, so its value extends well beyond the original post.
Key takeaways
- Creators influence a large and growing share of Indian consumer spending.
- Select creators for audience fit and credibility, not just reach.
- Build longer partnerships and brief for outcomes, not scripts.
- Give every post a path to purchase and amplify winners with partnership ads.
- Disclose clearly and measure sales, not just views.
